Microsoft’s Revenue Share Will Be Reduced by OpenAI

As part of a restructuring effort, OpenAI intends to drastically cut the revenue share it gives Microsoft, according to a report by The Information. Up until 2030, OpenAI and Microsoft have historically agreed to split 20% of the company’s profits. By the end of the decade, this share might drop to 10%, though, according to updated financial projections. The modifications are a part of a larger restructuring plan that has been scaled back to allow OpenAI’s nonprofit parent to maintain control, which may limit the power of CEO Sam Altman. According to reports, Microsoft wants to keep using OpenAI’s technology after the current contract expires in 2030. Following a joint venture with Oracle and SoftBank of Japan to potentially construct $500 billion in AI data centers in the United States, Microsoft updated the terms of its agreement with OpenAI in January. Microsoft claims that despite the modifications, the fundamental components of its collaboration with OpenAI—including revenue-sharing arrangements—remain in place through 2030. OpenAI stated that it continues to work with Microsoft and expects to complete the reorganization shortly.
