Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said that AI could start hurting the job market with 2-3 years, opening roughly 20 year period of disruption before machines make the goods and services far cheaper.
Gates, 70, made the comment on the interview on the Verge’s Decoder Podcast published Oct/22/2026. He said that the shift to AI “Driven make Winners & Losers”
He called the twenty years an approximate figure and said the transition could take more or less time. He did not estimate how many job could be lost
The Jobs, Bill Gates says AI will hit first :-
Gates listed three areas where AI can do work more cheaply, faster and with fewer errors on people
- Tele-sales
- Telephone customer support
- Accounting
Bill Gates also added that young people and workers in entry & mid level role faces the most exposure. These roles generally involve repeatable tasks, which are the easiest for AI to take-over.
Robots could follow within a decade :-
Gates also predicted that humanoid robots arrive in the time frame of between two – eight years and will take on the physical
such as building homes, growing food & even performing surgery.
That would extend automation from office jobs to manual labor. Gates describe this as part of the path to an era of abudance, and also said the years before it would also be difficult.
A call for government oversight :-
Gates said technology companies cannot manage AI’s risks on their own, especially while competing hard against each other.
He called for Stronger government oversight and technical safeguards. He named the AI enabled cyberattacks and biological threats as the most urgent near term dangers.
He also raised the idea of reserving certain professions for humans, and even machine becomes better than them.

Not a new position:-
The interview builds on the essay Gates published on August. 26, in which Bill Gates argued AI could reach jobs in law, customer service, medicine, software and manufacturing.
He has also spoken before about AI and human purpose. In 2024 Podcast with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, he joked that machine might one day tell him to go and play pickleball while it worked on eradicating malaria.
What it means for India’s tech workers:-
Gates warning lands differently in India, where customer support, back office work & accounting services are large part of the technology and outsourcing industry.
So far, the numbers show pressure, not collapse. Nasscom expects India’s Technology workforce to grow 2.3% in FY26 to 5.95 employees. Nasscom said more than 20 lakh of those workers have been trained with AI skills.
That is the group Bill Gates called the most exposed-
Young worker starting their careers. If junior roles shrink, fewer people get early experience that leads to senior jobs.
What still remains unknown:-
Bill Gates time is the forecast, not a deadline. key questions are still open:-
- Will companies use AI to cut staff, or to serve more customers with same teams?
- How fast will governments act on oversight and worker support?
- Will new AI related jobs grow fast enough to absorb displaced workers?
For, workers the practical step is to look at which daily tasks are repetitive and digital. Those are most exposed. work that involves judgement, client trust and responsibility for outcomes is harder to automate.
