iOS 27: the new Siri AI, faster performance, and which iPhones actually get it

When Apple introduced iOS 27 at WWDC on June 8, the biggest talking point was its redesigned Siri powered partly by Google’s AI. However, there’s an important catch that often goes unnoticed. Simply installing iOS 27 isn’t enough—you’ll only get the upgraded Siri if your iPhone supports it.

Last year’s iOS 26 brought the flashy Liquid Glass design, and it shipped with bugs and slowdowns. Apple seems to have heard the complaints. It led the keynote with fixes, not features, and called iOS 27 a stability release.

The performance gains are the quiet story. Apple says apps open up to 30 percent faster and photo previews load up to 70 percent faster. A new CPU scheduler, the part of the system that decides which task gets priority, spreads these gains to older phones. AirDrop transfers are faster too.

Apple Is Reportedly Rebuilding Siri with Google Gemini

The big change is Siri. For years it lagged behind tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Apple promised a smarter Siri back in 2024 and failed to ship it, which became an embarrassment.

This time Apple did something it has never done before. It confirmed that its next-generation Apple Intelligence models are built on Google’s Gemini. The new Siri can hold a conversation, pull personal context from your Mail, Photos and files, see what is on your screen, and carry out tasks across apps. It also gets its own app, a chat-style history, and a swipe-down “Search or Ask” gesture from the top of the screen.

One detail is widely reported but not official. Bloomberg says Apple is paying Google about $1 billion a year for a custom Gemini model with roughly 1.2 trillion parameters. Apple has not confirmed the money, so treat those numbers as reported, not fact.

Apple stressed that privacy still comes first. “We believe privacy in AI is non-negotiable,” senior vice president Craig Federighi said during the keynote. Tasks that cannot run on your device are handled by Apple’s Private Cloud Compute.

The Fine Print: What Your iPhone Actually Gets

iOS 27 itself runs on older iPhones, reportedly as far back as the iPhone 11.
The new Siri AI and Apple Intelligence need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.
A few of the most advanced features need the A19 Pro chip, which means an iPhone 17 Pro.

So if you have an older iPhone, you can install iOS 27 and enjoy the speed boost, but the Siri upgrade that Apple spent most of the keynote on will not appear. Check Apple’s official list before you expect it.

When You Can Buy It

Apple released the developer beta in June. A public beta is expected in mid-July, with the full release in September 2026, around the time the iPhone 18 launches. Betas can be buggy, so most people should wait for the September version.
